The 150th anniversary

This year, we are commemorating the 150th anniversary of John Clare's death, and there has been a whole string of events to support this:

  • A number of events centred on Northampton.
  • An exhibition at Kettering Library which finished on 3 June.
  • The John Clare and The Shepherd's Calendar exhibition at Northampton Museum, finishing on 8 June.
  • An exhibition of the John Clare Collection at Peterborough Museum, ran until 22 June.
  • The John Clare in Space: Poetry, Nature and Contemporary Culture conference at Oxford Brookes University 30 - 31 May - with an all star cast.
  • The Fairhaven Singers performed This Happy Spirit - a wonderful concert held in St John's Church, Peterborough, on 17 May. This featured the World Premiere of Somtow Sucharitkul's new choral composition, ClareVoyance, the recording of which can be seen here.
  • A wreath laying ceremony in Poet's Corner, Westminster Abbey, on 20 May. Recordings of the tributes at this event can be found on YouTube:
  • The John Clare Society festival, in Helpston, from 11 to 13 July.
  • The Unearthed exhibiton at various venues during the year (Clare Cottage, Northampton Museum, and Peterborough City Gallery) - see Events for details.
And more will be added as the year progresses.  For more detail, just click on the News and Events link over on the right.

This year sees the inaugural John Clare Memorial Lecture at the University of Northampton - more detail on the events page. This will be an annual event.

In addition, there was the Northampton Choral Competition; a new Centre for John Clare Studies has been established at Cambridge; and the John Clare Facebook group have produced a John Clare 150 page of artistic tributes.

If you hear of any other Clare-related events which are not listed on our Events page, please let me know.
